“Catch the Cycle” Recycling Program Thomaston Upson Schools launch.
The Thomaston Upson School Board gave approval to Greensun to move forward with a recycling program in the schools. On Friday, November 14th a recycle bin will be placed in every classroom in Upson County for an America Recycles Day Celebration. Following this as support for teachers, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs will hold Teacher Development to better prepare teachers to “Catch the Cycle.” It was approved that funds earned from the sale of collected recyclables will go towards an Earth Day green environmental project in the schools. The Griffin Hub will service the outside recycle bins as part of the Thomaston program with Pratt Recycling. Mrs. Karen Truesdale, Director of Public Relations, Thomaston-Upson Schools facilitated this cooperative private public partnership effort. Greensun and the Thomaston Upson community continue to step in the right direction in recycling and beautification.

City participates in national can recycling competition

by Jane Lee
The City of Thomaston is competing in a nationwide recycling competition.
Backed by Mayor Arnold and the City Council, the contest, Cans for Cash, is a creation of The United States Conference of Mayors and Novelis Corporation.
The contest challenges cities across the country to collect as many recyclable aluminum beverage cans as possible for the month of October.
Patti Robinson and son, Frank Mason, are spearheading the Cans for Cash drive with the City of Thomaston.
“We’re so excited that Thomaston is participating in this national campaign. It puts us in a league with communities that are committed to and concerned about conservation,” said Patti.
“We want our planet to be a garden, not a landfill,” she added.
Mayor Hays Arnold said, “The City of Thomaston is pleased to be a part of this nation wide challenge. It is a good, fun way to remind the community to recycle and be responsible stewards of our planet.”
Cindy Friar, local Troop Leader for both Girls and Boys Scout Troops, spoke to The Times regarding the Troops’ participation in the aluminum can drive, “In an effort to reduce our own household garbage, it is our duty to ‘recycle, reclaim, reuse, reduce’. The Boy and Girl Scout Troops are working on their recycling badges through this competition.”
All of the proceeds from the drive will go to the Gilmore Center.
Patti and Frank Mason are encouraging everyone in the community to get involved with the competition.
To help Thomaston win the nation wide, city to city contest, all aluminum cans should be dropped off at the recycling bins located behind the Gilmore Center located next to the Civic Center, now through October 31.
